Cocorosie: Grey Oceans

CocoRosie has never ceased to push the limits of what a delicate, little female voice can make as far as a mix of feelings go. Grey Oceans is absolutely no exception to this, if not, is the best example of it. The eeriness of their tracks can be off-putting to a first-time listener, and seems boring, but upon further time spent, one will usually figure out that it’s actually a very friendly sound, and doesn’t get stale very quickly or with ease. Also, their choice of lyrical subject can often draw a distinction from the sounds that are actually coming out of the speakers, which is one of their best qualities. A good example of this is “By Your Side” from their La Maison de mon Reve record, which sounds too delicate and quirky to be an anthem of domestic lifestyle, but is nonetheless.

Grey Oceans starts off solemn and quiet, maybe even a bit tiresome, but what’s lost in “Trinity’s Crying” is made up for throughout the whole album, or perhaps it’s better to say, the first track is only there to warm up the ears. “Smokey Taboo” cuts in with jungle-esque hits, very reminiscent of several tracks from La Maison de mon Reve, but in a new, and more refreshing way. Bianca Casady tears through this track with authoritative rhymes and melodies, which are about as abrasive as CocoRosie has ever been. Dynamic track qualities can also be found in “Hopscotch,” which features Sierra Casady’s infamous humming, buzzing, whining solos that’s become a CocoRosie staple, but then surprises it’s listener with a jumpy piano chorus. Both “Hopscotch” and “Smokey Taboo” manifest age-old CocoRosie sounds with bracing, more buoyant individuality than seen before in Noah’s Ark or La Maison de mon Reve.

The closing track “Here I come,” ends the record, for lack of a better word, quite nicely. To compliment use of a shoegazey voice to set a haughty rhythm, “Here I come” is sounded out and balanced nicely by Sierra Casady’s gentle whims and vocal quirks, and then rounds out with a calm piano gallop at the end. Bianca and Sierry Casady have done with Grey Oceans what they’ve always done, a very playful yet eerie sound. Another great album the Casady sisters have put out, and their music has remained what should be a doctored treatment for insomnia. No sounds will relax and excite so eloquently as these. Their sound as always, but thoroughly with Grey Oceans, will pay off tremendously.

Panda Bear: Tomboy

Noah Lennox, better known by his stage name, Panda Bear, has stuck to his guns on his new single, Tomboy, straying not far from the droney, stirring vocals his listeners have previously become familiar with in Person Pitch, such as tracks like "Bros," "Good Girl," and "Take Pills." Tomboy uses a repetitive guitar sample to back up Lennox’s reverberating voice, which plays with the listener in a fun way, but only briefly and with little depth. Similiarly to "Comfy in Nautica," what Tomboy fails to do is provide a contrast from the beginning of the track, to the middle, and on to the end. The same guitar sample and customary synth beat repeat and loop, which does create a somewhat therapeutic characteristic to the track. Adding to this, too, is the collection of (repeating) lyrics such as, “What’s my life like?” and “No matter what it takes.” Lyrics that have a self-studying quality to them are no stranger to this track, which go hand in hand with the almost remedial feeling it has.

When it’s all said and done though, Tomboy provides the listener with very little contrast in feeling and sound throughout it’s entire four minutes and nineteen seconds. Unlike Person Pitch’s Good Girl, which gallops, trots, climbs, and descends throughout almost thirteen minutes of different sounds and feelings. Good Girl completely contrasts it’s opening two minutes of overbearing synth hits at ten mintues, when the listener is hearing Lennox’s soft voice singing words like “I want you to know, sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me.” A distinction that will make the listener want to play the track again, or force the listener to play it more than once to even realize that it’s there.

More of this contrast and lengthiness would have been pleasurable with Tomboy, but Lennox’s freightliner melodies and vocal ideas are of their own. Which, as unfortunate as it is to say, makes listening to this track once or twice sufficient. It’s obvious repetitiveness is never a quality, nor is an overbearing attempt at being original one either, so it was pleasing to hear Lennox keep that middle ground and give his listeners what they were hungry for. With Tomboy, don’t expect any curveballs

First of three takes on Mary Shelley's versions of serial killers. This piece-in-the-works is influenced by Robert Hansen, who kidnapped prostitutes in the early 80s to his cabin in River Valley, AK. Here, he would let them loose on his acres of property and meticulously hunt them down with either a blade, or a .223 Ruger's Rifle.

David Cross, one of the funniest motherfuckers to ever walk the earth, is coming to Salt Lake City on September 28th to do a stand up show at In The Venue. I'm gonna splurge my $35 on a ticket and go, even though my mom and girlfriend both might consider it not a very "worthwhile" way of spending my money. I don't care though. Fuck it.

I just bought a few bits off his "It's Not Funny" album, and I realized something. There's a lot of irony in the title of this album, because when you're actually listening to it, it's totally fucking hilarious. So, why did he name it "It's Not Funny?" I bet he was trying to be funny. There's one bit on his other show called "Diahrea Mustache," I thought that was a really hilarious title for the bit, so I google image searched "Diahrea Mustache," and this guy popped up.

On our last night in Madrid, Hondo was shooting the shit with a spanish club promoter in the square near where our hostel was. Evidently, he was explaining to Hondo that there was tons of hot girls, and that if we came to his club he would buy us our second round of drinks on the house. When he found out we were American he said it would ensure us lots of "fucky fucky." Five American kids bored and half drunk in Madrid, we didn't think anything of it besides "Meh, what the hell, let's go." When we arrived at the hole in the wall, Danny, Pat, and Kyle booked it from behind us and before we knew it, there Hondo and I were standing in the middle of a dark pub being pressured into a drink by the promoter. To our right was 5 or 6 drunk, fat, sloppy and downright disgusting Spanish hookers, caked in makeup and open for business. To our left was a drunk Spanish guy getting a handjob in the booth five feet away from where we were standing. Hondo turns to the guy and in Spanish said "Man you took us to a hooker bar!" The guy asked what we thought he meant by "fucky fucky," which I guess is a good point. Needless to say, we adios'd that guy a good night and bounced real fucking quick.

Anyways, he let us keep a few fliers from his brothel as a souvenir, here's one of them. It still hangs on our fridge to this day.

Brendan and Bryan are good homeys, and I guess it's because of that that they got such an awesome going away present.... This baggy, logistically, works better than just about any other sandwich bag I've ever seen. It's contents go hand in hand.

This is what's so far of my bike. It's almost done, when Mike got it, it was barely running, or maybe not at all. Here it is now, running strong. He cleaned up the engine, adjusted the carbs, and gave the gas tank a new face. We're going to put a smooth bench seat on there and a few other minors and it should be on the road.

5 Red Flags if you're thinking about moving to Salt Lake City.

1.) People are too nice. and when I say too nice, I don't mean they're friendly and easy to get along with, I mean they're outwardly friendly even if you're a complete stranger on the street, which becomes rather arbitrary and well, annoying.

2.) The heinously outdated drinking laws here, although getting better day by day, totally fucking suck. People who live here may proudly defend Utah and it's drinking laws as being "no big deal". But quite honestly, 3.2 beer fucking totally sucks the shit out of my ass. I try and drink 10 three-two beers quickly, hoping for a nice buzz, and usually end up pissing it all away. When I go out of state I drink 4 or 5 at the same rate and end up humiliatingly drunk. It works negatively on both ends. Not to mention that Last Call at every bar must be 1am. I often find myself bored, half drunk, and aimlessly wandering for a place to conclude my night at about the same time I would be deciding where to BEGIN partying if I were in any other, normal, lively city.

3.) The cops here are pricks, and I'm only saying that from personal experience. There are probably a handful men on the SLC Police Force who are stand up guys. Just like anywhere else though, I've experienced a lot of that power trip; that "I'm a cop and you're not" syndrome we all know too well. But what separates SLC cops from cops in other places is that there's no fucking crime here, so the point where they turn from "friendly protecting-the-neighborhood" cops into "get the fuck up against the car" cops is set down a few notches. This is when you start having a cop in your face and raising his voice over your J-walking violation.

4.) The Great Salt Lake is a tease. I drive past it from time to time, and it's totally a big, gigantic, salty fucking tease. Imagine if it wasn't salty? There would be all kinds of beaches, lake activity, and definitely girls in bikinis. It would spark a whole new source of revenue for the city, which would attract more than your annual ski vacation family. Instead, what we have to deal with is a big, mucky, smelly, salty mess.

5.) The W Lounge isn't fun on Wednesday nights.

It's been over a year since my last post. I don't know why I haven't posted on here in so long, but that's about to change. Honestly, I'm not blog-bluffing.

A good neighbourhood friend, Dave Doman, was in San Diego last week. He fell skateboarding and hit his head, he is currently in a medically-induced coma being treated in one of the best facilities in Southern California. I talked to close friends last night and they said he was having procedures done to help the swelling go down, and he is expected to make a full recovery. Anyone who reads this please keep him in your thoughts, I can't wait to see him make a speedy recovery and see him ripping around the 'hood on his new bike.

You can see his new whip on 4Q conditioning. His roommate, Chris sent in a photo and an explanation of what happened and Max from 4Q posted it. Get well soon Dave.

A few weeks ago I was in the grocery store and I was thinking about how amazing it is that this gigantic building is full of all different kinds of substances that we put into our bodies. How do we choose what to eat? Imagine if there was only one kind of food. Instead of going to the grocery store, we just went to the food ATM and it dispensed a weeks worth of the generic substance. That would be cool.

Canada is a really great place. I'm fortunate enough to be able to spend a bunch of time here in British Columbia this summer. I feel like this country gets grouped together with America simply based on the fact that they're neighboring countries. I guess it takes a closer look to realize how different they actually are.

This is what Canada looks like. It's a relatively large place. The arrow is pointing to some college, or university. I don't really know I just grabbed this image off google image search.
